    Why mangroves matter

    Mangroves grow in the tidal zone of deltas, with breathing roots that tolerate salt. They are nurseries for fish, protect coasts from cyclones and tsunamis, and store large amounts of carbon ('blue carbon'). The Sundarbans (shared with Bangladesh) are the largest, home to the Royal Bengal Tiger and the Sundari tree.
