    The Major River Systems

    Rises in Tibet near Mansarovar; its five tributaries are the Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi, Beas and Sutlej (Punjab = 'land of five rivers'). Shared with Pakistan under the Indus Waters Treaty (1960).

    Why the Narmada and Tapi form estuaries, not deltas

    The Narmada and Tapi flow westward through rift valleys (faulted troughs between the Vindhya and Satpura ranges). The fast flow through hard rock and the narrow mouth prevent silt deposition, so they form estuaries rather than deltas — unlike the east-flowing rivers.
