    Core concept

    The IUCN Red List is the world's most comprehensive inventory of the conservation status of species. It assesses the risk of extinction and guides conservation priorities. Conservation itself is done either in the wild (in-situ) or outside it (ex-situ).

    Static foundation — the Red List categories

    In order of increasing threat: Least Concern (LC) → Near Threatened (NT) → Vulnerable (VU) → Endangered (EN) → Critically Endangered (CR) → Extinct in the Wild (EW) → Extinct (EX). Two more: Data Deficient (DD) and Not Evaluated (NE).
